Back Pain, Hip Pain, and Wrist Pain
Back pain, hip pain, and wrist pain are all common complaints from athletes (and non-athletes who love to play golf), which is why several things are extremely important for prevention:
- See your doctor for a physical exam before playing golf or taking up golf as a new hobby. You want to be well aware of risks to your health that may be factors for you in your current physical condition.
- Get professional help to make sure you are using the proper golf swing. How you position your body before, during, and after you take your golf swings to the golf ball can make a difference in how well your body can perform, recover, and avoid injury to muscle and tendon tissues. Great form is a good preventative for golf injuries, especially back, hip, shoulder, arm, and wrist pain.
- When you experience pain, stop and assess this pain. Playing through pain can cause injury that may take you off the golf course for longer recovery times.
To Address Pain from Golfing
If soreness after playing golf is a problem for you, apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes to any areas that are sore. and then rest for recovery. If the pain and discomfort persist, see your medical doctor who may recommend a course of treatment such as medications, bracing, or physical therapy.
Range of Motion Issues
Range of motion issues are also common if you suffer stiffness during recovery time or if you need to improve your flexibility.
To Address Range of Motion Issues While Golfing
- Stay well hydrated.
- Do stretching and strengthening exercises on a regular basis (as directed by your doctor or golf fitness experts) and do warm-up activities to stretch your joints, muscles, and tendon tissues before you pick up that club. A well warmed-up golf swing is far less likely to cause injury.
- If you have a particular joint or area of concern that’s lost range of motion, see your doctor for recommendations. Your doctor may suggest physical therapy, medications, chiropractic care, or even regular massages to address your issue.
Medial Epicondylitis or Golfer’s Elbow
Medial epicondylitis is a common golf injury that is frequently called Golfer’s Elbow. Golfer's Elbow is particularly painful and can take a while to heal. It requires months of self-care and likely a trip to your doctor’s office. It is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist inward toward the palm.
Symptoms of Golfer's Elbow
- Pain running from the elbow to the wrist on the inner side of the forearm.
- Swelling or inflammation.
Golfer’s Elbow Recovery Time and Care
Golfer's elbow recovery time can vary from person to person, depending on that person’s body and the severity of the injury, but can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months.
- Apply ice to the affected area after the pain first presents for 15 to 20 minutes in intervals.
- Rest the affected area.
- See your doctor if the pain persists. They may recommend strengthening exercises, anti-inflammatory medications, bracing, Corticosteroid injections, or in some rare cases, surgery.
